Answer Capsule

Across seven AI platforms studied on September 18, 2026, SE Ranking is the consensus leader for small businesses that need affordable, practical AI SEO and content optimization without a large SEO team. It was named by 6 of 7 platforms (85.7% share) at an average listed position of 3.0, and it was the only entity to appear in the top three on five separate platforms. Frase is the strongest alternative for content-led teams that want SERP research converted into briefs and drafts, while Surfer SEO leads for on-page optimization scoring and NeuronWriter wins on entry-level price. The principal limitation is that this study used one standardized prompt sent once to each included platform, and public pricing, plan names, and AI-search feature availability conflicted materially across sources for nearly every entity — so buyers must verify current checkout terms before purchasing.

1. SE Ranking

Questions This Section Answers

  • Is SE Ranking worth it for a small business that needs keyword research, rank tracking, and competitor analysis in one tool?
  • What are SE Ranking's main drawbacks for a small business on a tight budget?
  • Which SE Ranking plan should a small business choose if it needs AI search visibility tracking?

Verdict. SE Ranking is the consensus leader because it is the only entity in this study that six of seven platforms named, and because it covers the widest slice of the small-business SEO workflow — keyword research, competitor analysis, site audits, rank tracking, local SEO, and content-oriented optimization — inside one subscription [1]. It is a good functional fit but only a mixed budget fit, because public 2026 sources conflict materially on plan names and pricing.

Why it ranked here. SE Ranking earned 6 platform mentions (85.7% share) at an average listed position of 3.0, with a best position of 1. It was ranked first by Anthropic, second by OpenAI, Google, and Perplexity, third by Grok, and eighth by DeepSeek — the widest spread of any top-three entity. That spread reflects a real disagreement about value rather than about capability.

Best suited for. Small businesses or small marketing teams managing several websites or requiring ongoing rank tracking and audits; buyers wanting broad SEO workflow coverage rather than a narrowly focused AI writing tool; businesses that value local-search analysis, competitor research, and actionable technical recommendations.

Main strengths for this use case. The Core plan includes keyword research, rank tracking for 2,000 keywords, site audits, backlink analysis, and AI search visibility across ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews [2]. The Content Editor studies the top 10 competing pages and suggests word count, headings, keywords, topics, images, and readability level as a working brief [3]. The keyword database covers 5.4 billion keywords across 188 country databases [2]. G2 rates ease of use at 9.3/10 across 1,432 reviews, higher than Semrush's 8.4 [4]. Google's assessment highlights an open-source Model Context Protocol (MCP) server that connects SE Ranking's Data API to AI assistants like Claude, ChatGPT, and Gemini [5]. .

2. Frase

Questions This Section Answers

  • Is Frase worth it for a small business publishing up to 10 AI-assisted articles per month?
  • What are Frase's main drawbacks compared with a full SEO suite?
  • Which Frase plan should a small business choose if it needs more than one site or seat?

Verdict. Frase is the strongest alternative for content-led small businesses that want SERP and competitor research converted into structured briefs and drafts. It is a good fit for guided content optimization but not a complete SEO solution — it requires supplementary tools for keyword discovery, backlink analysis, and rank tracking.

Why it ranked here. Frase earned 6 platform mentions (85.7% share) at an average listed position of 3.17, with a best position of 1. It was ranked first by Google, Grok, and OpenAI, second by Anthropic, fourth by Perplexity, and tenth by DeepSeek.

Best suited for. Owner-operated or small marketing teams producing roughly up to 10 AI-assisted articles per month on one site; businesses that want SERP competitor analysis converted into briefs and in-editor optimization recommendations; teams needing a guided workflow rather than raw keyword lists and spreadsheets.

Main strengths for this use case. Frase analyzes pages already ranking for a query, surfaces related keywords, questions, competitor coverage, and content gaps, then converts the research into a structured brief [6]. The editor provides real-time SEO scoring and identifies topics, questions, sections, and internal-link opportunities [7]. Question-based research via People Also Ask mining reveals opportunities competitors have not addressed [8]. AI visibility tracking is now included on all plans, monitoring brand appearance across ChatGPT, Google AI, Perplexity, Claude, and Gemini — Starter tracks 2 platforms, Professional 5+, Scale unlimited [9]. Reviewers report the research-to-brief workflow reduces research time from hours to minutes [10].

Main limitations. Starter's 10-article and 50-audit-page monthly limits are restrictive for higher-volume publishers [e2:official:C2]. Frase does not offer keyword discovery, backlink analysis, rank tracking, technical SEO auditing, or traffic forecasting [11]. AI-generated drafts are consistently rated as usable but generic, requiring significant editing before publication [12]. Pricing scales poorly as volume rises — Professional at $103+/month becomes expensive relative to budget-conscious startups [13]. Page audit limits are restrictive for larger sites: Starter monitors 3 pages, Professional 15, Scale 50 [14]. .

3. Surfer SEO

Questions This Section Answers

  • Is Surfer SEO worth it for a small business that publishes four or more articles per month?
  • What is the true all-in cost of Surfer SEO once SERP Analyzer and AI Tracker add-ons are included?
  • Is Surfer SEO or Frase better for a small business that needs on-page optimization scoring?

Verdict. Surfer SEO is the study's leading specialist for on-page content optimization. It is a good fit for small businesses that publish or refresh SEO content regularly and want guided, competitor-informed optimization without hiring a large SEO team — but it is not a full SEO suite, and realistic all-in costs rise well above the headline plan price.

Why it ranked here. Surfer SEO earned 5 platform mentions (71.4% share) at an average listed position of 3.6, with a best position of 1. It was ranked first by Perplexity, third by Anthropic, fourth by DeepSeek, and fifth by both Grok and OpenAI.

Best suited for. Small businesses with an owner, marketer, or writer who can implement recommendations; teams producing or updating several SEO pages or articles per month; buyers prioritizing keyword clustering, SERP-based content briefs, and straightforward on-page optimization guidance.

Main strengths for this use case. The Content Editor provides real-time SEO scoring and optimization recommendations while writing, analyzing the top 20 ranking pages for the target keyword and providing data-driven checklists on keyword usage, content structure, word count, NLP terms, and heading organization [15]. All plans include unlimited keyword research with 100+ searches per day and built-in semantic clustering [16]. The Content Audit feature tracks existing pages and recommends refreshes for underperforming content [18]. Native integrations with Google Docs and WordPress fit existing small-business workflows [19]. Surfer analyzes more than 500 on-page signals from top search results [20].

Main limitations. Surfer is not a complete SEO suite: it lacks backlink analysis, technical site audits, Core Web Vitals, and rank tracking in base plans [21]. There is no free trial — only a 7-day money-back guarantee [22]. SERP Analyzer is a $29/month add-on on Standard and lower plans [23]. AI Tracker costs $95/month for 25 tracked prompts [24].

4. NeuronWriter

Questions This Section Answers

  • Is NeuronWriter worth it for a small business that writes its own content on a tight budget?
  • What are NeuronWriter's main drawbacks on the Bronze and Silver plans?
  • Which NeuronWriter plan does a small business need for WordPress integration and plagiarism checking?

Verdict. NeuronWriter is the study's strongest value proposition on price. It is a good fit for small businesses with straightforward content optimization needs, limited SEO expertise, and tight budgets — but the fit degrades significantly if the buyer needs CMS integration, plagiarism checking, or multi-language NLP support.

Why it ranked here. NeuronWriter earned 3 platform mentions (42.9% share) at an average listed position of 2.67 — the second-best average position in the study — with a best position of 2. It was ranked second by Grok and third by both DeepSeek and Google. Its lower mention count, not its placement quality, is why it sits at rank 4.

Best suited for. Owner-operated businesses and small marketing teams optimizing blog posts, service pages, and informational content; buyers wanting actionable SERP, competitor, semantic-term, outline, and content-score guidance at a relatively low subscription price; businesses willing to review, edit, and publish content themselves.

Main strengths for this use case. NeuronWriter delivers NLP-driven keyword recommendations with search volume and competition data, identifies quick-win topics where competitors undercover content gaps, and suggests related keywords based on competitor analysis [25]. SERP analysis displays top 10 competitor content structure, identifies common topics and keywords across ranking pages, and flags long-tail keyword opportunities competitors miss [26]. Real-time NLP-driven content scoring compares drafts against top-ranking pages and suggests semantic entity coverage, heading structure, and internal linking [27]. Bronze at $23/month offers 75–80% lower cost than Surfer SEO with similar NLP-based scoring [28].

Main limitations. AI-generated content requires heavy editing; multiple independent reviews report output is generic and serviceable only for first drafts [29]. WordPress integration, Google Search Console integration, and plagiarism detection all require the Gold plan at $69/month [31]. Full NLP entity analysis covers only 19 of 170+ supported languages, and German, Portuguese, and Chinese users report noticeably weaker semantic recommendations [33]. Bronze limits users to 2 projects and 25 content-writer analyses per month [e4:official:C1].

5. Ahrefs

Questions This Section Answers

  • Is Ahrefs worth it for a small business that needs backlink and keyword data but has a limited budget?
  • What are Ahrefs' main drawbacks on the Starter and Lite plans?
  • Is Ahrefs or Semrush better for a small business that needs competitive analysis depth?

Verdict. Ahrefs is a good fit for small businesses that treat SEO as a primary growth channel and prioritize backlink data depth and competitive research — but only for those with consistent SEO workload and the ability to navigate credit limits. Starter is entry-level testing only; Lite is the practical floor for ongoing work.

Why it ranked here. Ahrefs earned 3 platform mentions (42.9% share) at an average listed position of 3.67, with a best position of 2. It was ranked second by DeepSeek, fourth by OpenAI, and fifth by Perplexity.

Best suited for. Owner-operators or small marketing teams managing one to a few verified websites; businesses that value SEO data, competitor research, and guided optimization over fully automated content production; small businesses with ongoing SEO work that can justify Lite's monthly cost.

Main strengths for this use case. Ahrefs maintains one of the most active web crawlers with industry-leading backlink depth [34]. AI keyword research uses 10+ presets to uncover opportunities from a single seed, with AI search intent classification and AI translation to 40+ languages [35]. AI Content Helper generates click-worthy titles and meta descriptions and analyzes top-ranking article structures [38]. Site Audit includes Patches that auto-fix meta tags without developers and an AI Detector that checks AI-generated content percentage [39]. Content Gap identifies keywords competitors rank for but the site does not [40].

Main limitations. Starter is extremely limited: 200 monthly credits, 50 tracked keywords, 1 project, and no ability to purchase additional credits or users [41]. Lite's 1,000 monthly credits run out quickly on active research because each report load or filter consumes one credit [43]. There is no free trial on paid plans, and no money-back guarantee after subscription begins [44]. AI citation tracking is a retrofitted add-on via Brand Radar, not a core ranking metric [45].

6. Semrush

Questions This Section Answers

  • Is Semrush worth it for a small business that can spend around $139 per month on SEO?
  • What are Semrush's main drawbacks for a microbusiness with a budget under $150 per month?
  • Which Semrush plan does a small business need for content optimization and AI visibility tracking?

Verdict. Semrush is a good fit for small businesses that need broad, actionable SEO and AI-search intelligence in one platform and can justify the subscription cost. It is a mixed value proposition for very small or low-frequency users because the current entry plan is relatively expensive and advanced content optimization appears to require a higher tier.

Why it ranked here. Semrush earned 3 platform mentions (42.9% share) at an average listed position of 4.0, with a best position of 1. It was ranked first by DeepSeek, third by OpenAI, and eighth by Perplexity — the widest disagreement among the top six.

Best suited for. Small businesses with an owner, marketer, or consultant able to interpret SEO data; businesses needing keyword research, competitor gap analysis, site auditing, rank tracking, and AI-search monitoring in one platform; businesses with recurring SEO work substantial enough to justify approximately $139 monthly or $117.33 monthly on annual billing.

Main strengths for this use case. The Pro plan includes the Keyword Magic Tool with search volume data and keyword difficulty metrics, with a daily report limit of 3,000 requests and up to 10,000 results per report [46]. Organic Research shows competitor keywords, top pages, and estimated traffic, and Keyword Gap compares up to five domains [47]. The Content Toolkit integrates ChatGPT with SEO data and provides an AI Article Generator producing SEO-optimized articles [48]. The AI Visibility Toolkit tracks mentions in AI answers across ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, and Google AI Mode [49]. The Pro plan supports up to 5 projects and 500 keyword tracking slots [46].

Main limitations. The entry price of $139.95/month remains prohibitive for micro-businesses with marketing budgets under $150/month [46]. Pro plan caps at 5 projects and 500 tracked keywords, forcing expensive upgrades as the business grows [50]. No historical data access on the Pro tier [51].

7. Scalenut

Questions This Section Answers

  • Is Scalenut worth it for a small business that wants keyword clustering and AI drafting in one tool?
  • What are Scalenut's main drawbacks on the Starter plan?
  • Which Scalenut plan does a small business need for more than 5 GEO articles per month?

Verdict. Scalenut is a good fit for small businesses that want keyword/topic planning, SERP-based competitive analysis, content briefs, and guided on-page optimization in one tool. It is less compelling for very price-sensitive businesses, low-volume publishers, or buyers seeking a full technical-SEO suite.

Why it ranked here. Scalenut earned 3 platform mentions (42.9% share) at an average listed position of 4.67, with a best position of 4. It was ranked fourth by both Google and Grok and sixth by Anthropic.

Best suited for. Owner-led businesses or small marketing teams producing several SEO articles per month; businesses that need practical content briefs, topic clusters, competitor benchmarks, and optimization recommendations without hiring a large SEO team; buyers that value an integrated AI-content workflow and emerging AI-search visibility features.

Main strengths for this use case. Scalenut's Keyword Planner supports topic clustering, intent-driven planning, AI-generated prompts, competitor-domain insights, and keyword-gap identification [52]. Content Optimizer provides NLP/key-term suggestions, SERP insights, competitor breakdowns, questions, content scoring, metadata guidance, schema-related guidance, readability checks, gap analysis, and step-by-step or automated fixes [53]. The platform benchmarks against the top 10, 20, or 30 ranking URLs and reports competitor word count, SEO/content scores, headings, key terms, links, and content-depth signals [54]. Cruise Mode generates 2,000–3,000 word SEO-optimized blog drafts in approximately 5 minutes [55]. Integrations include WordPress, Semrush, Shopify, Copyscape, Google Search Console, Grammarly, and ProWritingAid [56].

Main limitations. The Starter plan limits users to 5 GEO articles and 5 optimized articles per month, making the Plus tier much more practical for active small businesses [57]. AI-generated content requires 2 to 3 hours of manual editing per 1,500+ word article to sound natural and clear high AI detection scores [58]. Topic suggestions are less granular than Ahrefs or Semrush [59]. The platform is primarily focused on English blogs [60]. Some independent reviews note friction with billing and cancellation processing [61]. .

8. Mangools

Questions This Section Answers

  • Is Mangools worth it for a small business that mainly needs keyword research and rank tracking?
  • What are Mangools' main drawbacks for a small business that needs technical SEO audits?
  • Is Mangools or Ubersuggest better for a small business on a sub-$50 monthly budget?

Verdict. Mangools is a good fit for small businesses needing affordable, easy-to-use keyword research, localized SERP analysis, competitor keyword discovery, backlink checks, and rank tracking. It is a weaker fit when the buyer expects a comprehensive AI content-generation platform, deep technical site auditing, or advanced AI-search optimization in the base plan.

Why it ranked here. Mangools earned 3 platform mentions (42.9% share) at an average listed position of 5.67, with a best position of 3. It was ranked third by Perplexity, sixth by OpenAI, and eighth by Anthropic.

Best suited for. Owner-operated businesses and small marketing teams planning content around local or long-tail keywords; buyers wanting one relatively simple suite covering keyword research, SERP analysis, rank tracking, backlinks, and basic competitor research; businesses that can turn keyword and SERP data into content decisions without needing a full-service SEO workflow.

Main strengths for this use case. KWFinder provides keyword difficulty scoring via a 0–100 color-coded scale, search volume trends, related keyword suggestions, and competitor keyword analysis across 65,000+ locations, with a keyword database of 2.5 billion keywords [62]. The suite bundles five tools — KWFinder, SERPChecker, SERPWatcher, LinkMiner, and SiteProfiler — into a single subscription [63]. All paid tiers include AI Search Watcher PRO at no extra cost, monitoring brand mentions across ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Grok, and other LLM-based search engines [64]. The interface is consistently praised for intuitive UI and minimal learning curve [65]. Independent testing reports Mangools delivers roughly 80% of the value of Ahrefs or Semrush at 20% of the cost for small to mid-size content operations [66].

Main limitations. No technical site audit or crawler: Mangools cannot detect 404 errors, broken links, missing meta tags, or Core Web Vitals issues [67]. The keyword database of 2.5 billion is much smaller than Ahrefs (21B) or Semrush (25.4B) [67]. Daily lookup limits on Basic (100 queries) can be exhausted quickly [68].

9. Evergreen AI

Questions This Section Answers

  • Is Evergreen AI worth it for a small business that wants hands-off automated content production?
  • What are Evergreen AI's main drawbacks for a business in a regulated industry?
  • What does the $149/month Evergreen AI plan actually include?

Verdict. Evergreen AI is a good fit for small businesses seeking an affordable, hands-off system that combines competitor gap analysis, keyword research, AI content generation, page refreshes, and CMS publishing. It is less suitable for buyers needing transparent standalone keyword databases, deep technical SEO auditing, extensive competitive intelligence, or guaranteed editorial review.

Why it ranked here. Evergreen AI earned 2 platform mentions (28.6% share) at an average listed position of 3.5, with a best position of 2. It was ranked second by Kimi and fifth by Anthropic. Its high average position but low mention count is why it sits at rank 9.

Best suited for. Small businesses without an internal SEO specialist; businesses that want automated content production and page refreshes; owners prioritizing practical recommendations and direct CMS publishing over granular SEO controls; businesses with one website and a content-led organic growth strategy.

Main strengths for this use case. Evergreen AI identifies keyword gaps where competitors rank but the customer does not, researches high-intent terms, and uses live SERP scans and top-ranking pages in its content workflow [69]. The plan includes tracking three competitors and competitor gap analysis [70]. The service generates new articles, audits pages that are slipping, refreshes and re-optimizes existing pages, and provides AEO-oriented output with schema and answer-first structure [69]. The product lists Google Search Console, WordPress, Shopify, Sanity, Webflow, Wix, Ghost, custom API, Markdown export, and HTML export as available integration or publishing options [70]. Google's assessment describes a 35-step content pipeline that runs live SERP scans and filters out low-quality AI output [71].

Main limitations. The plan tracks three competitors by default; broader competitive coverage requires paid capacity [70]. The product is optimized around automated content and page updates, not comprehensive technical SEO, backlink analysis, local SEO, or detailed standalone keyword reporting [69]. AI output requires human fact-checking and editing; automated publishing creates additional quality-control risk [72]. Published performance claims are vendor-reported and do not establish typical results [69].

10. Ubersuggest

Questions This Section Answers

  • Is Ubersuggest worth it for a small business that needs affordable keyword research and content ideas?
  • What are Ubersuggest's main drawbacks for a small business tracking more than 125 keywords?
  • Which Ubersuggest plan does a small business need for AI search visibility tracking?

Verdict. Ubersuggest is a good fit for a small business needing affordable, relatively straightforward keyword research, content ideation, competitor analysis, site audits, and basic AI-search visibility insights without a dedicated SEO team. It is less suitable for buyers needing deeply automated content optimization, enterprise-scale reporting, API access, or independently validated data accuracy.

Why it ranked here. Ubersuggest earned 2 platform mentions (28.6% share) at an average listed position of 5.0, with a best position of 4. It was ranked fourth by Anthropic and sixth by Google.

Best suited for. Owner-managed local or small online businesses doing practical keyword and topic research; small marketing teams needing competitor keywords, content ideas, site-audit priorities, and rank tracking in one tool; buyers wanting a low-complexity starting point before moving to a more advanced SEO platform.

Main strengths for this use case. Ubersuggest provides keyword overview metrics including search volume, CPC, paid difficulty, SEO difficulty, search intent, related terms, questions, comparisons, and content ideas [73]. The platform reports AI Keyword Overview and AI Prompt Ideas features that summarize intent, trends, brands, source websites, and generate prompts, answers, or content outlines [74]. Competitor comparisons cover traffic, keyword strategy, backlinks, top pages, keyword gaps, similar websites, and tracked competitors [75]. Site Audit and SEO Opportunities identify technical issues, content-structure opportunities, new keyword opportunities, and prioritized recommendations [76]. The September 2025 AI Search Visibility update tracks brand visibility, sentiment, and citations across ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, and Perplexity [77]. Pricing is reported 40–90% lower than Ahrefs or Semrush [78].

Main limitations. The Individual Plan's 150 daily searches limit constrains power users or teams running large keyword research batches [79]. The 125 tracked keywords per project on Individual requires add-ons at $5/month each for campaigns tracking 150+ targets [79]. Backlink analysis is less comprehensive than Ahrefs or Semrush [79]. The 1-project and 1-user limit on Individual blocks multi-site small businesses [80].

What the Cross-Platform Study Reveals About This Market

Questions This Section Answers

  • What do AI platforms collectively reveal about the AI SEO tool market for small businesses in 2026?
  • Which AI SEO capabilities do most platforms agree small businesses need most?

Three patterns emerge from the cross-platform evidence.

First, the market splits into two distinct product categories. Five of the ten qualifying entities — SE Ranking, Ahrefs, Semrush, Mangools, and Ubersuggest — are traditional SEO research suites that have added AI features. The other five — Frase, Surfer SEO, NeuronWriter, Scalenut, and Evergreen AI — are content-first tools that have added SEO research. Platforms disagreed about which category fits the small-business buyer better. Anthropic, Google, and Grok consistently favored content-first tools for buyers without SEO staff, while OpenAI, DeepSeek, and Perplexity favored integrated suites for buyers who want one subscription.

Second, AI-search visibility is the most contested capability. SE Ranking, Frase, Surfer SEO, Semrush, Scalenut, Mangools, Evergreen AI, and Ubersuggest all claim some form of AI-search or generative-engine visibility tracking. But in nearly every case, the feature is either a paid add-on, gated to a higher tier, or unclear in scope.

Where the AI Platforms Agreed

Questions This Section Answers

  • Which AI SEO tools did all seven AI platforms agree are good fits for small businesses?
  • What capabilities did the AI platforms unanimously say small businesses need in an AI SEO tool?

Platforms agreed on several points.

NeuronWriter is the best value on price. All seven platforms that assessed NeuronWriter rated the fit "good," making it the most consistent entity in the study. Multiple platforms independently reported that NeuronWriter offers 75–80% lower cost than Surfer SEO with similar NLP-based scoring [81].

Content optimization requires human review. Anthropic, Google, Grok, OpenAI, and Perplexity all independently reported that AI-generated content from these tools requires significant human editing before publication. Frase's drafts are "usable but generic" [82]. Surfer's AI articles require 30–60 minutes of editing [83]. NeuronWriter's output is "serviceable for first drafts only" [84]. Scalenut's articles require 2–3 hours of editing per 1,500+ words [85].

Keyword and topic research is table stakes. Every qualifying entity offers keyword research. The differentiation is in depth, database size, and how research converts into content decisions. .

Where the AI Platforms Disagreed

Questions This Section Answers

  • Why did AI platforms disagree about which AI SEO tool is best for small businesses?
  • Which AI SEO tools received the most conflicting fit ratings across platforms?

The study's most material disagreements were about value, not capability.

SE Ranking's budget fit. OpenAI rated the fit "mixed" and flagged that the reported newer Core price may be too high for a single-site owner [86]. Anthropic, DeepSeek, Google, Grok, and Perplexity rated it "good." Kimi rated it "mixed" and argued it is not a strong fit for buyers wanting an autonomous AI SEO agent [87]. DeepSeek ranked it eighth — the lowest placement of any platform that named it.

Ahrefs' complexity and cost. Google, Grok, and Kimi rated the fit "mixed." Google reported that AI Content Helper is a $99/month add-on and Brand Radar starts at $199/month per AI platform [88]. Kimi argued Ahrefs fails the "affordable, practical, without large team" criteria [89].

How Buyers Should Choose

Questions This Section Answers

  • What should a small business check before choosing an AI SEO tool in 2026?
  • Which AI SEO tool should a small business choose if it needs both keyword research and content optimization?
  • How should a small business decide between a full SEO suite and a content-first AI SEO tool?

Start with the workflow, not the brand. If the buyer's main need is deciding what to publish and then optimizing it, a content-first tool — Frase, Surfer SEO, NeuronWriter, or Scalenut — will deliver more value per dollar than a broad suite. If the buyer needs ongoing rank tracking, site audits, competitor intelligence, and local SEO in one subscription, an integrated suite — SE Ranking, Ahrefs, Semrush, Mangools, or Ubersuggest — is the better fit.

Then verify three things before purchasing.

Verify the current plan name and price at checkout. For eight of the ten entities, public sources conflicted on pricing. SE Ranking's plan names changed from Essential/Pro/Business to Core/Growth [90]. Frase's plan names changed from Solo/Basic/Team to Starter/Professional/Scale [91].

Methodology

This study used one standardized prompt sent once to each of seven included AI platforms on September 18, 2026. The prompt asked which AI SEO tools would be recommended for a small business that needs affordable, relatively easy-to-use support for keyword and topic research, content recommendations, competitive analysis, and straightforward optimization guidance without a large SEO team.

The seven platforms included were OpenAI, Anthropic, DeepSeek, Grok, Perplexity, Kimi, and Google. Each platform returned a ranked list of recommended tools. Entities named by at least two platforms qualified for the final ranking.

The final ranking order is based on platform mentions first, then average listed rank, then best listed rank. The ranking table is the sole authority for rank, platform mentions, platform share, average listed position, and best position. Platform mentions count only ranking-discovery mentions — not the number of platforms that later completed a fit assessment.

Each qualifying entity was then assessed for fit against the small-business use case using the evidence bundles supplied for this study. Fit ratings, pricing summaries, strengths, limitations, and disagreements are drawn from those bundles. Citations are platform-reported evidence, not independently verified facts.

Methodology Limitations

Several limitations apply.

One prompt, one run. The study used a single standardized prompt sent once to each platform. AI answers can vary by date, wording, location, account state, model, interface, browsing configuration, and the sources retrieved. A different prompt or a different day could produce a different ranking.

Platform-reported research dates differ from the run date. DeepSeek returned research dates ranging from 2026-01-15 to 2026-06-19 depending on the entity. Anthropic returned 2026-01-15 for Ubersuggest. These dates are provenance metadata and do not independently prove freshness.

Platform recommendations are market intelligence, not customer reviews. A platform naming a tool does not mean the tool is high quality or that it will work for a specific business. It means the platform surfaced that tool in response to the prompt.

Pricing and plan names conflicted across sources for most entities. Where sources conflicted, this report describes the conflict and tells buyers what to verify rather than resolving it by guessing.

Company-owned sources outnumber independent sources for some entities. Evergreen AI's evidence bundle contains 13 company-owned citations and 8 independent citations. Company claims are labeled as such and are not described as independently verified. .

Final Verdict

SE Ranking is the consensus leader for small businesses that need affordable, practical AI SEO and content optimization without a large SEO team. It was named by 6 of 7 platforms at an average listed position of 3.0, and it covers the widest slice of the small-business SEO workflow in one subscription. Its main weakness is budget fit: the reported newer Core price may be too high for a single-site owner, and AI-search visibility requires a paid add-on.

Frase is the strongest alternative for content-led teams that want SERP research converted into briefs and drafts. Surfer SEO leads for on-page optimization scoring. NeuronWriter wins on entry-level price. Ahrefs leads on backlink and keyword data depth. Semrush leads on integrated SEO plus AI-search intelligence. Scalenut, Mangools, Evergreen AI, and Ubersuggest each fit narrower buyer situations.

No tool in this study guarantees rankings, traffic, or AI citations. Buyers should verify current plan names, prices, usage limits, and AI-search feature availability at checkout before purchasing.
